Yes on 85 - notify parents before minors get abortions
TODAY'S EDITORIAL - In all other areas of the parent-child relationship,
the law recognizes the parents' right to know about what medical treatment
their child is being given. As the cliché goes, "The schools can't give your
kid an aspirin without parental approval."

A parent's right to know
"As the law now stands, many teenagers don't tell their parents because
they don't have to; they know that no matter how well-off their family is,
they can get a government-paid abortion by pleading poverty,
and their folks will be none the wiser. That's just not right."

Restore parental rights and responsibilities: Yes on 85
Our readers will recall during last year November's special election Proposition 73
was presented as a constitutional amendment...
We believe it was because the voters were also unhappy with the Schwarzenegger [special
election]
that Proposition 73 was defeated. One might say that this baby was
thrown out with the bathwater.
But now this basic concept is back before us as Proposition 85.
And once again the Paradise Post urges its readers to support this much-needed
amendment to our state's constitution.

Orange County Register Endorses Proposition 85
(9/5/2006)
Prop. 85: Parental notification a reasonable requirement
Abortion is one of the most contentious issues of our time. But even many who favor
legalized abortion support the idea that a minor's parents or legal guardian should
be notified by medical authorities before she can be given an abortion.
It does seem odd that parents must be notified before a school can give a girl a
flu shot, but under existing California law can be kept in the dark about a procedure
that has far more serious medical, psychological and other consequences for their
daughter.

Long Beach Press Telegram Endorses Proposition 85
(8/25/2006)
But a girl under the age of 18 can get an abortion, an invasive surgical procedure,
without her parents' knowledge. Proposition 85, a Nov. 7 ballot measure that would
require that doctors notify one parent or receive judicial consent before minors
undergo an abortion, would remedy that inconsistency.

Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C., countered that opponents “want to strip the overwhelming
majority of good parents their rightful role and responsibility because of the misbehavior
of a few.” He pointed out that the judicial bypass provision would help pregnant
teens with abusive parents get around the law.
